Where in the world are they from?
Found within southern India, most notably Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
What is the ideal number to keep together?
A schooling species that should ideally be kept in groups of 8-10 or more. When kept in groups males will be able to establish a proper heirarchy and any aggresion will be distributed within the group.
What water conditions do they require?
Best kept in pH of 6.0 - 7.0 and temperatures of 20 - 25 degrees celcius.
What should you feed them?
An omnivore by nature and will happily accept a range of foods including flakes, dried and frozen foods.
How compatible are they with other fish?
Suitable for the peaceful community.
Can they be bred in captivity?
An egg scatterer like most cyprinid species and when fully matured will happily breed, although unless separated raising of the fry is unlikely as there is no parental aftercare.
